I can only suggest that this is a monograph rather than an extended treatment of Botticelli's work or life. It may have been in its day a competent introduction to Botticelli but obviously over 100 years of scholarship have rendered some of its assumptions archaic. This greatest value of books such as these, is that they are snapshots of a particular era's assumption. For that reason we should be especially grateful to those volunteers who make many of books such as these available to the general public which heretofore would have been available only through a research library.
